It's a very nice writeup and project though. There's way more here than I can take in or summarize in a quick comment, but I do plan on digging into what you created at some point in the near future. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Recently OkMap freeware software (www.okmap.org) include a feature to generate automatically compatible Garmin custom maps (kmz format).
The map calibration is sophisticated because OkMap uses different type of projection and several datums.
This new feature includes map tiling from and to different image file formats (including from ECW map files).
It’s possible select KML extensions 2.2 (if GPS supports them), the JPEG quality, KML transparency, draw order, ecc..
You can select the tiles to generate in output.
This feature support also not north oriented maps.
OkMap include a Google maps server to download maps from Google, OpenStreetMap, MyTopo, DOCQ, ecc..
These two features combined together may be very useful.

I recently made a few extremely large TIFF files (almost 4 GB) that are OK according to TatukGIS and several other programs, but inaccessible in Ozi and even Img2Ozf. Des Newman explained that a major update is in progress and will get rid of these limitations. But I can't wait that long :)

What is more important: Img2Ozf always creates sub-100% zooms from the original image; it is not possible to create zoom levels from separate files (that is, prepared externally). Therefore digital sources like OpenStreetMap have a decent look only at 100% and perhaps 50%; anything less and the map is unusable even for preview, so lesser zooms must be converted into separate OZF files and switching between them becomes more difficult.

It seems that I finally will be able to code my own version of Img2Ozf :)

I came across a map my parents had from an old school that had been torn down.It is dated 1914. It is a map of Europe and was published by a company in Chicago, Illinois that no longer exists. First of all, thanks for your interest to ozex and swampex projects.

You know, I hope Ozex will never has such Boeing-like GUI as Ozi Explorer or QLandKarte has :) It is very annoying in real life - when you are trying to press some 8x8 icon during the offroad competition e.g. :)

Moreover, I had a success with decoding Garmin maps (even encrypted) by adding decoding routines to libgarmin. If you're interested in it, contact me by email.

Unfortunately, I have no time at all to support these projects.

Rene-Luc: The web workers will be practical, but they do not have access to the DOM of the page, so some transport of the calculated bitmaps must be implemented for that. Can you have a look at it?

Selectoid: Pleasure on my side. Thanks for pushing me to play with this ;-). Practical application for OpenLayers/Google Maps API would be an WMS layer/overlay with requests in EPSG:4326 bounds and with client side warping into Spherical Mercator. This way you can correctly display any raster data provided by old versions of ArcIMS and other WMS servers which does not support the Spherical Mercator natively. It will be for sure fast enough, because you can operate on "line blocks" of the bitmap for Mercator. Anyway, first a client who need that must appear, then I will make the stable and professional implementation.
